Project Summary

The Case Western Reserve Dorm Project encompassed two contracts for Cleveland Cement Contractors. The first was the construction of several new, cast in place concrete dormitory buildings that we worked in conjunction with Donley’s Inc. Given an extremely aggressive schedule that dictated that work take place in all buildings simultaneously, the decision was made to partner with Donley’s to ensure that the manpower and equipment needs of the project could be met. Cleveland Cement took three buildings, Donley’s took three and Higley was awarded the remaining building under a separate contract. While the dorms were being constructed, Case awarded Cleveland Cement the contract to build the 1,050 car cast in place post tensioned parking garage and grand stands. The challenge for Cleveland Cement on this project was to effectively communicate and coordinate the needs of several different structures, each having individual schedules, while working with two separate general contractors. The landmark buildings opened on time in the fall of 2005.

Project Summary

The difficulty in cast in place concrete stairs is to keep the riser even, the treads precisely spaced and the edges to be exactly parallel with each other. This is difficult and required a great deal of skill on a traditional set of stairs, but the difficulty is compounded when that set of stairs forms a corner. The stairs at Pinecrest are a prime example of what happens when expert carpentry meets expert concrete placement. The result is an architectural showpiece.
